Long before Splitska became a settlement, the Romans used it as a port for boarding Brač stone with which they built Diocletian's Palace in Split. Thus, above Splitska is the old Roman quarry Rasohe, and at the very entrance to the quarry, carved into the cliff, stands a relief of Hercules.
Hercules was the most famous Greek hero, the son of Zeus and Alcmene, the most beautiful women of that time and the protector of slaves. Probably one of them carved a relief in the rock for him as he extracted the stone for the palace.
You can visit the quarry by following the Hercules educational trail that starts on the seafront.
