The Veselje quarry is the largest quarry in Brač, in the immediate vicinity of Pučišća. Veselje in Croatian means happiness and the most famous type of stone picked on Brač has also the same name.
The bright white colour of the stone is clearly visible from the mainland and from aerial photographs, so it often adorns postcards of the town.
The quarry is mentioned as early as the 15th century when it was used by Juraj Dalmatinac. Giorgio da Sebenico (Juraj Dalmatinac) was a famous Venetian sculptor and architect from Dalmatia. He used Brač stone to build palaces and churches in Split, Šibenik, Trogir, Zadar, and Rab, but also in Italy (Ancona, Rimini and Tremiti).
