Who was St. Jerome (St. Jere)

St. Jerome (Latin: Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus), known in Croatian tradition as “St. Jere” or “Jeronim Dalmatinac,” was born around 347, most likely in Stridon, in the Roman province of Dalmatia or its neighbouring regions.

In church tradition, St. Jerome is honoured as the patron saint of Dalmatia, and in local folklore, it is often said that he proudly emphasised his Dalmatian roots. According to one legend, he once prayed with the words: “Forgive me, Lord, for I am a Dalmatian.”

This phrase has become a powerful symbol of belonging to Dalmatia and an identity that is never forgotten. His fiery temperament and passionate character, well known during his lifetime, are in this legend linked with traits often attributed to Dalmatians even today – honesty, intensity, and spontaneity.
