Rent a Car on Brač: The Complete Local Guide

This is one of the questions we get most often – in messages, comments, and in our Facebook group: Do I need a car on Brač, or can I manage without one?

The short answer is: it depends on the type of holiday you are planning.

If you are staying for a few days, based in Bol or Supetar, and expect to spend most of your time on the beach, you can probably manage without a car.

But if you want to see more than the town where you are staying, explore hidden coves, viewpoints, inland villages, and parts of the island that many visitors never see, having a car becomes a huge advantage.

The difference is actually quite simple. Without a car, most of your holiday will be spent between your accommodation, the beach, and nearby restaurants. With a car, you can swim in a quiet bay near Milna in the morning, have lunch in Gornji Humac, visit Vidova Gora in the afternoon, and finish the day on the waterfront in Bol or Supetar.

That is one of the reasons why many visitors say they only discovered the real Brač once they had a car.

Do You Need a Car on Brač?

Public transport exists on Brač and works well for certain types of trips. Bus routes connect all major towns on the island, and during summer, there are additional services aimed at tourists.

If you are staying in Supetar or Bol and do not plan to explore much, buses and the occasional taxi may be enough.

However, it is worth knowing the limitations in advance.

Bus schedules are designed mainly around local life. In practice, this means you have far fewer options in the evening than during the day. If you decide to have dinner in another town, stay longer at an event, or visit a less-known part of the island, your options quickly become limited without your own transport.

There are also places that are difficult to reach without a car.

Vidova Gora, Blaca Monastery, Dragon's Cave, Murvica, Ložišća, and many small coves along the southern coast are not places that are easy to visit by public transport. Interestingly, these are often the places visitors remember the most.

Getting around the island Brač

Our conclusion?

A car is not essential if you are staying in one place for a short time and do not plan to explore much. For anyone who wants to experience the island beyond the main tourist routes, renting a car quickly becomes one of the best investments of the holiday.

Should You Rent a Car in Split or on Brač?

This is probably the most common dilemma among visitors.

At first glance, Split often looks like the cheaper option. Large international companies usually offer a wider choice of vehicles and lower daily rental prices. However, the real calculation is not always that simple.

Advantages of Renting in Split

  • Lower daily rental prices, especially with larger international companies
  • Wider choice of vehicles
  • Better availability during peak season

Disadvantages of Renting in Split

  • The ferry for the vehicle is an additional cost
  • Transporting a car on the ferry costs more than €25 per direction, plus a passenger ticket for each traveller (around €6 per person)*
  • During summer, waiting times for vehicle boarding can last several hours, especially on weekends
  • Most rental companies charge an additional fee for taking the vehicle on the ferry
  • Picking up the vehicle at Split Airport or the city often means spending extra time in traffic and queues

Note: Ferry prices change from time to time, so always check the latest price list before your trip.

This is one of the details many people overlook when comparing prices. It is not only about money but also about time. When you are on holiday, spending two or three hours waiting for a ferry may matter more than saving a few dozen euros.

Advantages of Renting on Brač

  • You board the ferry as a foot passenger without waiting in vehicle lines
  • You do not pay ferry tickets for the car in either direction
  • Many local agencies deliver the vehicle directly to the ferry port in Supetar
  • More personal service and useful local advice
  • Easier vehicle pick-up and return

Disadvantages of Renting on Brač

  • Daily rental prices are often higher than in Split
  • Vehicle availability can be limited during July and August
  • Last-minute bookings always carry some risk

Our practical advice is simple. If you need a car for one to three days, renting on Brač often makes more sense once you include ferry costs and travel time.

If you are staying for a week or longer, it is worth comparing the total cost of both options and deciding based on your own priorities.

Practical Driving Tips for Brač

Driving on Brač is straightforward for most visitors. Roads are generally in good condition, traffic is moderate, and distances are relatively short.

The drive from Supetar to Bol takes around 35 minutes.

Still, there are a few things worth knowing before you arrive.

Parking in Bol

If you plan to spend a day at Zlatni Rat Beach, arrive early. The parking areas closest to the beach fill up quickly during summer, and finding a space after 10 a.m. can take some time.

Vidova Gora

The road to the highest peak of the Adriatic islands is fully paved and accessible with any standard passenger car. There is no need for an SUV or special driving experience.

Blaca Monastery

You cannot reach the monastery by car. You can drive to the parking area, but the final section must be completed on foot. The walk takes about 30 minutes and includes some uphill sections, so bring water and suitable footwear.

Petrol Stations

Petrol stations are located in Supetar, Bol, and Milna. This is not a problem for most drivers, but it is one of those details many people only notice when the fuel warning light comes on somewhere between Povlja and Sumartin.

If you plan to explore the eastern side of the island, it is worth checking your fuel level in advance.

Vehicle Delivery

One of the biggest advantages of local agencies is vehicle delivery directly to the ferry port in Supetar.

For many visitors, this is the easiest way to pick up a car. You step off the ferry, collect the keys, and head straight to your accommodation or your first beach.

How to Reach Brač Without a Car and Rent One After Arrival?

For many visitors, this is actually the most practical option. Especially for those arriving by plane in Split.

From Split Airport, you can take a bus or shuttle service to the ferry port. From there, simply board the next available ferry as a foot passenger, without waiting in vehicle queues.

The ferry crossing to Supetar takes around 50 minutes. Once you arrive, your pre-booked rental car can be waiting for you, allowing you to start exploring the island almost immediately.

For many visitors, this combination offers the best balance of convenience, cost, and flexibility.

Is Renting a Car on Brač Worth It?

Not for everyone. Many visitors enjoy a fantastic holiday in Bol, Supetar, or Milna without a car and are completely satisfied with their experience.

However, if you want to discover more than the town where you are staying, explore lesser-known beaches, viewpoints, villages, and hidden corners of the island, a car opens up far more possibilities.

Brač is not a large island. That is exactly why it would be a shame to see only one small part of it.

Sometimes all it takes is turning off the main road toward a village you never planned to visit. Those spontaneous detours often become the memories people remember long after the holiday is over.
